The Beaches
The coastline to the south of Granada is called the Costa Tropical. It is somewhat different to the neighbouring Costa Del Sol as it is generally much less developed. In summer the area is as popular with Spanish holiday makers as it is with northern Europeans.
Salobreña Beaches - are the first beaches you reach when heading south from the Valley. Salobreña has eight kilometres of coastline, about half of which is made up of the popular beaches of La Guardia, El Peñon, La Charca and Punta del Rio. All these beaches attract a large number of summer visitors. There are two lovely restaurants right on the beach, El Peñon and La Bahia, serving wonderful, fresh fish.
Almuñecar Beaches - Almuñecar's mild winter and long hot summer means there's a lively seafront scene throughout the year. In the winter months you can sunbathe here in the morning and be ski-ing on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada in the afternoon. Puerta del Mar Beach is the most popular beach here.
La Herradura benefits from a long beach, and its excellent selection of tapas bars and restaurants. There are several beaches between here and Nerja, to the west, including a nudist beach, which are very quiet as they are more difficult to get to. Water sports are very popular here. There are a couple of dive schools and for yachting the Marina del Este is just down the road.
Nerja - The larger resort of Nerja is about 45 minutes' drive from Restabal. It has several beaches and enough shops, markets, restaurants and nightlife to keep most of the family happy. The main square is a bustling place in the summer evenings, with street entertainers, artists and musicians creating a lovely atmosphere. Nerja Caves are well worth a visit too and are blissfully cool in the height of summer. The beautiful white village of Frigiliana is a 15 minute drive up the road.
Heading east towards Almeria there are many beaches, some with bars and restaurants and others completely undeveloped so you should find somewhere to suit your requirements.
